Rooms to Skip and Products to Use: The Notes That Keep a Cleaning Customer Happy
Customers rarely cancel a cleaning service because a counter had a streak. They cancel because the team cleaned the home office they asked everyone to stay out of, or used bleach on the marble, or sprayed a scented cleaner in a house with a sensitive child. Those are not cleaning skill problems. They are information problems, and the fix is two short notes on the job.
Two Notes Next to the Entry Code
The entry notes, covered in Lockbox, Door Code and Alarm: Entry Notes in the Cleaning Team App, get the team through the door. The same entry and notes section on the MaidBossPro job card also holds rooms to skip and products to use.
Together they answer the question every new team asks inside a home they do not know: “Is there anything this customer is particular about?” There almost always is.
Rooms to Skip
Customers have plenty of reasons to keep a room off the list:
- Home offices. Papers, screens and a desk set up just so. “Skip the office at the end of the hall. Door will be closed.”
- Teen bedrooms. Some parents want them cleaned anyway; many do not. “Skip the upstairs left bedroom unless the door is open.”
- Guest rooms not in use. “Guest room only on the first visit of the month.”
- Hobby and collection rooms. Sewing rooms, model trains, anything fragile or arranged.
- A sleeping household member. “Night shift worker sleeping in the main bedroom. Skip it and keep the vacuum away from that hall until noon.”
A good skip note is specific about which room and says what “skip” means: do not enter at all, or just do not touch the desk. “Skip office” in a house with two offices helps no one.
Products to Use
Product notes protect surfaces and people. Common ones:
- Stone counters. “Granite in kitchen. Stone-safe cleaner only, no vinegar or bleach.”
- Wood floors. “Use the customer's wood floor cleaner, under the kitchen sink. Damp mop only.”
- Fragrance-free. “Unscented products only. Customer gets migraines.”
- Customer's own supplies. “Customer prefers their own products in the hall closet. Use ours for anything not there.”
- Things to avoid. “No ammonia on the TV screens. Microfiber and water only.”
Keep the cleaning advice practical: when the customer names a product, follow the customer. When a surface is unfamiliar, test somewhere hidden or ask the office before going all in.
Who Writes These Notes
Most of these preferences come out during the first conversation or estimate walkthrough. The office should ask directly: “Any rooms you want us to skip? Any products you want us to use or avoid?” Customers who never thought about it often have strong answers once asked.
The rest come from the team. After a first clean, the team lead knows things the office never will: the bathroom with the unsealed tile, the dog bed that should never be moved, the customer who left a sticky note on the office door. Those go in the job notes so the office can add them to the home. For how to write notes that actually help, see Writing Job Notes the Next Cleaning Team Can Actually Use.
Carrying Preferences Forward
A preference only works if it is there on every visit. When the office books a new job at a home you have cleaned before, MaidBossPro fills it in from that home's last job, entry notes included, with a note saying so. The skip-the-office note from three months ago is still there for the team that cleans the house next Tuesday, even if it is a team that has never been inside.
That matters most when the regular team is out. A substitute team is the most likely to break a house rule, simply because they do not know it. With the notes on the card, they do.
When Preferences Change
The customer gets new floors. The teen goes to college and the room can now be cleaned. The night-shift worker changes shifts. Preferences change, and an out-of-date note causes as much trouble as a missing one. When a customer mentions a change, by text to the office or in person to the team, update the home the same day. Then tell the regular team lead, so nobody keeps working from the old rule out of habit.
