iPhone or Android: Running the Cleaning Team App on the Phones Your Cleaners Already Have
Walk into any cleaning company's morning meeting and count the phones. A couple of iPhones, a few Androids from three or four brands, one in a case held together with tape, one that is brand new. A team app that only works well on one kind of phone leaves part of the team behind. The MaidBossPro team app runs on both.
One App, Both Kinds of Phone
Whether those phones belong to the company or the cleaners, covered in Shared Team Phones or Personal Phones: Setting Up the Cleaning Team App Either Way, the next question is whether the app will run on them.
The MaidBossPro team app runs in the phone's browser, on iPhone and Android, and installs to the home screen. There is no separate iPhone version and Android version to keep in sync. Every cleaner sees the same list, the same cards and the same buttons, whatever phone they carry.
What a Phone Needs
The requirements are modest:
- A current browser. Safari on iPhone, Chrome on most Android phones.
- A data connection. Cell data or Wi-Fi to load the day, save photos and send updates.
- A working camera for before-and-after photos.
- Location access allowed for the browser, so team GPS shows on the office map.
- Some free storage so the browser and camera behave.
No special device, no rugged tablet, no extra hardware to buy.
On the iPhone
iPhone users install from Safari: Share button, Add to Home Screen, Add. A few iPhone-specific tips:
- Use Safari for the install. Opening the link from inside a text message preview or social app sometimes hides the Add to Home Screen option.
- Allow location and camera when the phone asks. If someone tapped “Don't Allow” by accident, it can be changed in the phone's settings for Safari.
- Low Power Mode can slow background updates. It is fine to use, but keep a charger in the car.
On Android
Android users install from Chrome: three-dot menu, Install app or Add to Home screen. Android tips:
- Menus vary by brand. Samsung, Motorola and others label things a little differently. The option is almost always in the browser menu.
- Battery savers. Some Android phones aggressively close apps to save battery. If the app keeps reloading, check the phone's battery settings for the browser.
- Permissions. Allow camera and location for Chrome when asked.
Mixed-Phone Teams
Most cleaning companies are mixed, and that is fine. Some habits make it smoother:
- Train in pairs by phone type. At the install meeting, group iPhone users and Android users so each group follows the right steps.
- Teach the same words. Start, Skip, Complete, navigation and the card are identical on both. Only the install steps differ.
- Pick a phone champion. If one cleaner is good with Android and another with iPhone, let them help teammates with the same kind of phone.
- Check old phones early. A phone that cannot update its browser may struggle. Better to know at the meeting than at the first lockbox.
When a Cleaner Changes Phones
Phones break, get dropped in mop buckets, and get upgraded. Because the team app lives in the browser and the cleaner's records live with the company account, switching phones is simple: open the team app link on the new phone, add it to the home screen, sign in with the company login and the same PIN. Their history, time records and past jobs are all still there. Nothing has to be moved from the old phone.
If a phone is lost or stolen, have the cleaner tell the office right away. The office should change that cleaner's PIN, and a screen lock on every phone with the app means a lost phone is not an open door to your entry notes.
Honest About the Limits
A browser app depends on the phone having a connection. In a basement apartment or a rural home with no signal, the app cannot load new information or send a Complete until the phone reconnects. That is covered in the next guide. It is the one real trade-off, and planning for it is simple.
The other limit is the phone itself. A browser app cannot make a very old phone fast, or give a full phone more room for photos. If a cleaner's phone is struggling, clearing out old videos and closing unused browser tabs often helps more than anything else. For the install steps on both kinds of phone, see Installing the Cleaning Team App From the Browser: No App Store Required.
